Destination Reculver on the North Kent coast which we found remarkably accessible as it is 60 miles from Coulsdon and takes just over an hour to get there mostly on motorway or dual carriageway nearly all the way. Aim for either of the car parks but beware if you park in the car park it is £1 per hour. We parked in a side road nearby and saved the money. The car park cafe does a good coffee!!
Head East and pass the twin towers of the old Reculver Towers and Roman fort which dominates the landscape. Cycle along the raised path which affords superb northern views of the sea (tide in or tide out) or south of the flat reed marshes. Good for bird lovers. If you stick to the coastal concrete path you by pass Westgate on Sea and after 10 miles or so of very easy cycling you reach Margate which of course has the Tate on the front which is free to pop in.
Keep to the coast and go through Cliftonville and overlook Botany Bay (see photo). The terrain changes in Margate and the coastal front consists of cliffs and sheer faces down to the sea. Head to Broadstairs and there are plenty of places to have lunch close to Viking Bay. This is a quintessentially English place, quaint and quirky.
Ramsgate is not much further round the coast but we decided to cut back across the middle and take the inland route to Margate and retrace our ride along the coastal path.
Overall this ride was 30 relatively easy miles on mainly flat coastal promenades and paths. The weather helped enormously as we were able to have lunch in the sunshine in the garden of the Pavilion at Broadstairs.
The e-bikes: One large Scott E-Genius 720. Fitted extras are Selle Royale saddle, Ergon grips, Exposure inbuilt lights, Topeak rack and Mtx bag, Saint pedals, mudhugger mudguards and a Bosch Nyon display with sat nav feature. Smart Sam tyres give extra puncture resistance and lower rolling resistance. It has a 500wh Bosch system so on this ride as mainly the modes were Eco or tour (or none) the range was more than adequate (60% remaining on meter.)
The second e-bike is a 2019 Cube Stereo Hybrid SL 120. This too is a full suspension bike with a composite frame for lightness and comfort. We love this e-bike which has a variety of extras making it comfortable and enhances the performance. A Klick Fix front handlebar bag holds a mobile and other small essentials. This too has a 500wh hour battery and a punchy CX Performance motor. This e-bike is great value at £3699.
Overall if you want a very British cycling experience past beach huts and tea and ice cream cafes then go for this. Anything but extreme cycling but terrific views and plenty of places to stop and take in the sea air.
